ONLINE Program

Even in the situation where various study abroad programs have been canceled due to the influence of the new coronavirus infection, ① Improving academic and practical language skills, ②Continuation of global education, ③Providing an environment where you can experience and understand different cultures through interaction with local staff and students With the following three main objectives, we opened AUAP Online and AUASP Online in 2020 (Reiwa 2) and AUCP Online in 2021 (Reiwa 3).

AUAP Online

Online classes where you can learn real-life English and cross-cultural experiences
The Asia AUAP (Asia University America Program) (AUAP) is a program with a long history and track record at our university, which started in 1988. ``AUAP Online'' is an online version of the ``Global Human Resources Development Course.''
Students will learn English through classes taught by local instructors from three universities in Washington state (CWU, EWU, and WWU), and deepen their understanding of other cultures through interactions with local students.

AUAP Online 2
AUAP Online 3
``AUAP Online'' is similar to the actual AUAP ``Global Human Resources Development Course,'' where students take classes offered at three universities in Washington State, USA, online during class hours at Asia University. While actively exchanging opinions and having discussions with local regular students who participate in each class, you will learn practical English, and you will also be able to learn about America and international society through English.

Furthermore, there are many opportunities to interact with local staff and students outside of class hours, so it is not only a place to practice the English you have learned in class, but also a place to interact and teach each other about each other's language and culture. It can also be used as

AUAP Online is Credit certifying program that not only allows you to learn English online, but also allows you to experience a different culture and value system that is different from Japan's.

When I first saw the news about AUAP online on the Asia-University portal, I was worried about the tuition fees and the high level of Lecture, so I hesitated for days about whether or not to take the course. However, in the midst of the corona crisis, even though the freedom of movement in Japan is restricted, it is not certain whether I will be able to go abroad to study in the remaining two and a half years of my university life. Also, I have lived abroad for nearly 10 years, so even though I can speak the English that I learned when I was young, I felt that I was not very good at learning the language itself. My TOEIC scores were sluggish, and I couldn't overcome reading, which I was not good at, so I wanted to do something about it. Therefore, I decided to take AUAP online because I felt that I needed to take action on my own.

My AUAP online destination university was Western Washington University. In the first class, we learned about self-introduction, TOEIC problem structure, and time allocation through singing. Even though it was online, I can still sing the songs we sang together perfectly. After that, I was able to enjoy learning by listening to songs and solving problems in pair work. I was not good at reading, but I was taught how to solve problems and tips, and before the TOEIC test, I looked back at the materials that the teacher put together. As a result, my TOEIC score, which had been sluggish, increased by 50 points, and I was able to reach the point where I was one step away from my target score.

If you live only in Japan, it becomes difficult to understand the differences in lifestyles around the world. In fact, while the vaccine for the new coronavirus has not progressed much in Japan, it was very impressive that a student from Western Washington University urged, "I've been vaccinated the other day, everyone should get it soon!" In this way, it was only by taking this AUAP online that I learned about American life.

Instead of feeling sad that I wasn't able to live the campus life I expected, I want to look forward and do what I can. If you want to enjoy your university life without losing to the new coronavirus, how about choosing AUAP Online as the first step?

In the “American Studies” class that I chose, I was able to learn from teachers who actually live in the United States about issues facing American society, such as racial issues, LGBTQ debates, and indigenous issues. Unlike the world history that was viewed objectively in school classes until now, he shares the facts that he has actually seen and experienced. Such knowledge is rarely obtained in Japan, and it is, so to speak, raw information that does not pass through mass media or other media. For example, when I heard about the participation in the Black Lives Matter demonstration, which was recently in the news in Japan, I felt strongly that the problem was real.

In each class, students attending local universities participate as volunteers and participate in discussions. I was able to talk to someone. In the actual conversation, not only do you talk about the person's hobbies and life in English, but also listen to interesting things such as the general image of students, such as what kind of life cycle American college students and high school students lead. I was able to.

The online study abroad system was a great opportunity for me to learn English. I've always been interested in studying English, and I've been thinking since I was in the first grade that I want to focus on learning English, but I was worried about whether I would be able to make it in the country, so I couldn't take the first step. Under such circumstances, I came across this AUAP online, and by interacting with native people while in Japan, I gained confidence in speaking English, which is important in language learning, and talking to foreigners I met for the first time. Being able to do this has become the greatest treasure for me in this class.

Everyone is welcome to experience this class from the trial class.

I was originally planning to study abroad at the State University of New York for five months starting in March 2020. However, due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, the actual study abroad was canceled. While I couldn't organize my feelings, I learned that "AUAP Online", which allows you to take classes at your study abroad destination online, will be implemented. To be honest, I remember being very worried about whether or not I should pay to take the course, and whether it would be meaningful to see it through the screen. However, it does not cost as much money as studying abroad, and it is attractive to have the opportunity to talk with people living in the United States every week and take local classes in an environment where you cannot leave your home, let alone Japan. I decided to participate.

What I learned

In fact, by participating in AUAP Online, I was able to come into contact with English more than I had imagined, and I feel that this has helped me improve my language skills. This may be because the class style was not to learn English grammar and pronunciation itself, but to learn various cultures, politics, and social issues of the world in English. I looked up the meaning of words and listened intently to understand what teachers were saying... Thanks to that, I feel that I was able to deepen my understanding more than if I had taken the same class in Japanese.

State of class

I was given a lot of assignments every week, and the content was difficult, so I spent a lot of time preparing and reviewing. In particular, I was very nervous at first because I had to talk one-on-one for more than 30 minutes when I had to present and submit a report to a local student via video chat. As time went on, I was able to talk about various topics, which was fun, and I gradually gained confidence in my English skills.

In class, there are frequent opportunities to exchange opinions in small groups of 4 or 5 people, including local students. During the free talk time, I had a lot of fun talking with local students about my favorite music artists. While having fun interacting with local students, I was able to improve my ability to listen to English, think in English, and communicate in English.

Impressive

On Halloween, when everyone in the class wore hats and headgear during class, I was able to experience the unique atmosphere of America, and it left a deep impression on me. Although it was online, it was a new discovery that I was able to experience a different culture through the screen.

I am happy that I was able to do what I wanted to do as much as possible at that time without thinking, "I can't do anything because of the corona crisis." I'm glad I took "AUAP Online"!

    Participation history

    AUASP Online_Osawa
In March 2020, just before my departure for the AUASP program, a five-month study abroad program at UCSI University in Malaysia, I was honestly shocked when I was informed that the program would be postponed. However, I had heard that the students who were studying in the United States under AUAP had been forced to return home, so I thought there was nothing I could do about it. Even in Japan, classes have moved online due to the coronavirus pandemic, and as days continue without even going out, I began to feel despair that studying abroad during my university years might be difficult. At that time, I learned about the implementation of online study abroad and decided to participate immediately.

    Participation reason

All I knew about Malaysia was that it was a country in Southeast Asia until I applied for AUASP. While researching Malaysia before studying abroad, I was very interested in the society where people of various ethnicities and religions coexist in one country called Malaysia. I am also learning Chinese as a second language, and although Malaysia is not an official language, Chinese is spoken, so I wanted to improve my language skills. However, since I can't actually go there, I wanted to learn more about Malaysian culture and society, even though it was online, so I participated.

    State of the class/Things learned

All Lecture are given in English by professors at UCSI University. I am learning various things such as the history and culture of Malaysia, the basics of the Malay language. Malay takes in many words from English, so even if the spelling is different, some words have the same pronunciation. I was able to feel There are times when I have trouble listening and understanding, but there are scenes here and there that make me realize that Malaysia is a global country, and I enjoy learning.

    Impressive

What left an impression on me was Lecture on the theme of festivals. It was interesting to see how different religious festivals such as Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism are held in one country.

    join in

After taking the AUASP online course, I would like to not only improve my English skills, but also learn various ways of looking at things and different cultures through Malaysia, and be able to respect them more. It's quite difficult in the situation of the corona wreck, but I would like to be able to respect each other when life returns to the way it used to be.

    Participation history

There are two reasons for participating in AUCP online. The first reason is that I wanted to test my Chinese ability. I participated because I wanted to verify how well I understood the Chinese that I had learned at university. The curriculum at Dalian University of Foreign Studies, where I will be studying, is all in Chinese on weekday mornings, so I thought I could improve my Chinese ability. Secondly, online study abroad and internships were a new attempt, so I was attracted to the fact that I could experience something different from other people. I thought that the opportunity to connect with overseas and do an internship during the corona crisis was a valuable opportunity.

    experience online

In the curriculum of Dalian University of Foreign Studies, where I studied abroad, in addition to the core classes of intensive reading, spoken language, reading, and listening, I took HSK (International Chinese Language Test) preparation classes and Tai Chi classes. In addition to that, as a class at “ASIA YUME COLLEGE”, we have a class called "Work and Life in China" where people working in China talk about working abroad, and exchange with students of the Japanese language department of Dalian University of Foreign Studies. There was a "career training" to do.

One of the things that left the biggest impression on me was my experience in career training. There, I kept in touch with the Chinese students who were in the same group as me, and I was able to coordinate our schedules and exchange opinions on a variety of themes. For example, when I talked about the merits and demerits of online classes, opinions such as "It's good to have less time to commute" and "I can't see my friends" came out. There was something I could relate to as someone who was doing online classes together. For exchanges, we used Zoom, and we set a rule that Yumekare students should use Chinese and Dalian University of Foreign Studies students should use Japanese. There were times when I couldn't keep up with the talks, and I was keenly aware that I still had to work hard, but I enjoyed interacting with local students even online, and it left an impression on me.

During my online internship, I worked at Fuji Electric Dalian Co., Ltd. in Dalian for about a month. The contents of the internship included presentations once a week, data entry and translation work. One thing that left a particularly strong impression on me during the internship was that I gave a tattered presentation once. The theme was "Measures that Fuji Electric Dalian should take in light of the current situation of the corona crisis", and it was held in Chinese, but I entered the day with the misunderstanding that it would be in Japanese. As a result, the presentation showed a lack of preparation. From this experience, I learned the importance of confirmation, and since then I have started to ask for more confirmation when I do not understand something.

    acquired power

What I learned through the online program is the importance of being proactive. Since the class was mainly conducted using chat, if you don't respond when you don't understand, the class will continue to flow. Also, it was difficult to communicate with facial expressions and gestures because it was not face-to-face. If you don't actively participate, it's as good as not being there. I had a similar situation when I was an intern at a company. I learned the importance of contacting and reacting politely because it's online.

In terms of language skills, I was able to improve my listening skills. I was able to improve my listening skills by listening to the teacher's voice over and over again. In an online class, what the teacher said is recorded and sent to us one by one during the class. I think that it was cultivated precisely because the content of the class is online.

Impressions after participating in the program / message to juniors

At first, I was worried about the study abroad style, which was not an environment where I could study directly in the country, but I think I was able to change my mind and participate because it was an "online study abroad" that was in line with the times. Certainly, online study abroad may not be as good as actual study abroad. But there is also a bright side. For example, all the contents of the class remain online, so it is easy to review. I was able to listen to the teacher's voice many times, and my listening skills improved. In addition to language study abroad, this program, which includes an internship program, will increase opportunities to come into contact with not only Chinese but also Chinese society and culture. Thanks to “ASIA YUME COLLEGE” (AUCP), I was able to interact with Chinese students despite the coronavirus pandemic. I still keep in touch with the Chinese students I met there, and we keep in touch with each other. If you want to broaden your horizons, or if you have even a little interest in China, we recommend that you participate.
