Faculty of Economics
Department of Economics
Reason for choosing

When I was in high school, I didn't know what I wanted to do, but I had a vague dream of becoming someone who is needed by the world. So I chose Faculty of Economics, which seemed to give me more options for the future.

During the coronavirus pandemic
Because it's an online class
Thoroughly build a solid foundation in economics

When I enrolled in 2020, classes were completely online from the beginning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but I took a positive approach, thinking, "Since I don't have to commute to school, I can study hard at home," and I actively took classes that would help me understand the basics of economics from my first year. One of the classes I found particularly useful was Subject Open to All students "Spreadsheet Fundamentals and Applications." The class was designed to teach various data processing methods and skills in a practical way using Excel.
"The high school I attended was an ICT pilot school* so I was familiar with Word and PowerPoint, but I only had a little experience with Excel in class. My parents often used Excel to create documents at home, and they also told me that 'Excel is an essential skill for work,' so I didn't hesitate to take the course. In the specialized departmental subject 'Corporate Finance' in my third year, Excel is mainly used to analyze stock movements and companies, so learning it was a great decision."
In addition, in the specialized subjects taken from the first year, "Basic Mathematics for Economics," I relearned high school mathematics such as differential and integral calculus in relation to economics. This is mathematics that cannot be avoided when studying economics, but in the actual classes, I was glad to learn from a practical perspective rather than highly difficult mathematical knowledge or skills. This knowledge was useful in the "Introduction to Mathematics" class I took in the second year, and I believe it is essential knowledge for the future, as I will also need to interpret data in my graduation thesis.

What did you gain from your studies?

" Data Science Minor "
The breadth of learning
Widespread

From my second year, I started taking the "Data Science Minor" course, which allows me to systematically learn about data science, which plays an important role in many fields. The knowledge I gained here is useful for various qualification exams, and the certificate I receive upon graduation for earning 20 or more Credit from designated subjects can be useful in job hunting. If I want to pursue a career solely in data science, I need a lot of specialized knowledge, but I think that just understanding and using the basics will increase my future job options.
The required Subject Open to All students "Programming Languages (I, II)" broadened the scope of my learning. I was worried about the difficulty of the content, but I had heard that people who can program are in demand in society, so I decided to take the course. However, the class was actually very easy to understand, even for a complete beginner like me. They also offer mock exams for qualifications, so I would like to take them.

In group work
Understanding economics
Going deeper

In my third year, the number of practical economics classes increased. One of these was the specialized subject "Game Theory," which is an essential theory for understanding Microeconomics. My coworkers at work often ask me, "Are you developing a game?" Game theory is a field of study that uses applied mathematics to consider decision-making in business and social life, and it involves finding the action that will maximize your profits when the other party makes a certain move.
Although the lesson used mathematical formulas, I felt at ease because I was able to review basic mathematics.
Group work is also an important element in classes.
When we made flyers for our store in teams of 3-4 people, we were given A4 paper and had to come up with the flyer that we thought would be most effective according to several conditions. We prepared several campaigns to appeal to customers, such as a 100 yen discount for customers who brought a flyer to the store and special offers for couples. The group work in the face-to-face class was very rewarding.

Don't rush into job hunting
Through learning
I want to think about it.

I am currently preparing for my graduation thesis, but I would also like to start looking for a job by the end of the year. My friends who have already been to Career Center have strongly recommended that I go there, saying, "Everyone will listen to your concerns and give you lots of advice, so you should definitely go."
I think that I have been able to learn about society as a whole while also acquiring the knowledge and skills that will be necessary in the future. By studying data science, I have been able to consider the option of working for an IT-related company, but since digital transformation* is also progressing in other companies, I think the scope of my opportunities is expanding. I want to think about it carefully and without rushing.
Although I don't yet have a clear goal for the future, I believe I have been able to explore and build upon a wide range of learning.

Aiming for Asia University
To high school students and exam candidates

Message to prospective students

Actually, when I was a student taking entrance exams, I was undecided between two universities, but when I came to the open campus, I thought it was good that all faculties are in one place at Asia University, so I decided to go there. I didn't join any clubs, but I think that it was because we were on the same campus that I was able to interact with students from other faculties through introductions from friends. I would like all of you who are planning to enter the university to try to participate in various clubs and activities so that you can make the most of this advantage.
