Attracted by the founding spirit of "the spirit of Self-help and Cooperation"
Dreaming of starting a business in Japan
Decided to go to Asia University

I grew up in an area of Malaysia where many Japan people live. Japan food, which I had been familiar with since childhood, led me to fall in love with Japan culture, which led to my dream of starting a business in Japan. I persuaded my parents, who had recommended that I study abroad in an English-speaking country, that I really wanted to study in Japan, by preparing an elaborate study abroad plan.
During my one-year study at Japanese school, I was looking for a university where I could study business administration, and I was recommended Asia University, and I was strongly attracted to the system and environment that welcomed International Student, as well as the founding spirit of "the spirit of Self-help and Cooperation", so I decided to go to Asia University.
When I participated in the new student training held immediately after the entrance ceremony, I had high expectations not only for making friends, but also for the classes that were about to begin. However, after the class actually started, I became keenly aware of my lack of Japanese ability, and I borrowed notes from my friends to make up for the parts I couldn't hear. Instead, I was fortunate to be able to help my friends with Chinese and English classes, which I am good at.

Joined Karatedo Club
Experience Japanese culture
Exchange with other students at International Student Association

I joined Karatedo Club in order to learn a little about Japanese culture. However, at the time there were only three members, and feeling a sense of crisis about the small number of members, I went around calling out to International Student, saying, "Let's experience Japanese culture while exercising!" Now, the club has become very international, with 11 international International Student out of 17 members. We practiced almost every day in the club, and I myself placed third in the individual competition in the university league.
He also participated in running the "International Student Association" to which all International Student belong, helping to boost activities while assisting with accounting in his second year, serving as vice Executive chair, Board of Directors in his third year, and Executive chair, Board of Directors in his fourth year. Although activities were limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he held a series of events, including online Japanese language meetings and events in collaboration with International Culture Bureau of Student’s Association, and 54 people, including Japanese students, participated in a summer hike to Mount Takao.

Japanese management and administration
Practical learning through group work

ウン・ケンホウイイメージ2
Subject Open to All students "Leadership Theory" that I took in my second year was one of the classes where I learned a lot from failures, as I wanted to learn practical business management. I was able to learn about management that utilizes people's strengths in an organization through practical experience through group work. The team was not only divided by disagreements, but also by roles that everyone wanted and didn't want to play. However, if you look closely, there are various types of people, such as those who are good at research, those who are used to creating materials, and those who are not good at taking the lead. I tried to be a facilitator who would liven up the team and make meetings go smoothly, after doing some groundwork with the members. I think that I was able to improve my ability to see people, and I was able to make good use of this in group work during my job hunt.
In the specialized subject "Venture Business Theory" in the second and third years, students participated in group work that simulated the process of starting a venture business. In teams of three, students came up with a business idea, created a business model, and realistically followed the steps of starting a business, from planning for funds and sales to presenting for financing. We focused on the food waste business, and were able to think carefully about the path to our goal of "starting a business in Japan." At the end, an alumnus who had actually started a business came and spoke to us, which was very inspiring.

Part-time job
Volunteer activities
Expanded social experience

I had worked in Italian cuisine, a tempura specialty restaurant, an izakaya, and a privately owned ramen shop while I was still in Japanese language school, but I wanted to try many new things, so I decided to work part-time at a ramen chain restaurant near my university. I learned the know-how of management and customer service, and was also able to put the knowledge I had learned in class to good use, so it was a valuable opportunity to put it into practice. I'm proud to say that after one year at the ramen chain restaurant, I became the only foreign part-time leader.
I also started learning sign language after serving a hearing-impaired customer at the store. At the time, I asked them to write their order in a notebook, but I thought that if I could sign, I would be able to communicate more smoothly, and I just wanted to speak! I missed out on the lottery to enroll in the "Introduction to Sign Language" Subject, so I taught myself by borrowing notebooks from friends who were taking the class and by watching YouTube channels that teach sign language. This effort paid off when I volunteered at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. On the streets, I was able to guide hearing-impaired people to toilets and their destinations.
I also volunteered as Lecturer at an elementary school. I spoke about Malaysian culture and environmental issues, and also introduced the popular sport of sepak takraw in Southeast Asia in cooperation with the Asia Sepak Takraw Club. It was a very fun and meaningful experience to be able to communicate about Malaysia to the children together with my Japanese friends.

In parallel with job hunting,
Small business ventures
Taking on the challenge of becoming a management advisor

ウン・ケンホウイイメージ4
I became more interested in the food and beverage industry when I wanted to save the restaurant run by an 80-year-old woman whose sales had plummeted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and she was struggling to stay in business.
I started job hunting in my second year, researching major companies dealing in frozen foods, and participated in company information sessions and one-day internships during the summer vacation. I also made use of Career Center, and was advised that as International Student, I should have the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 1, so I obtained it in my third year.
While I was job hunting, I also tried my hand at starting small businesses and participating in other businesses. I worked as an agent for an online store that exported Japanese tableware to Malaysia, and I was in charge of arranging vehicles, wrapping, advertising, and other aspects of a food truck business that introduced and sold Malaysian products.
Now that he is about to graduate, he has explained his plans to his new employer and is involved as a management advisor in the management of a Malaysian restaurant and selling bento lunches. He is using all the management knowledge and experience he gained at university to provide advice on everything from inventory to product management and posting information on social media. His halal lunches, which he designed by calculating the cost rate, are popular with International Student from Asia University and other universities.

Owning your own store in Japan
Offer it to many people
I want to contribute to society

My goal is to start a business in Japan and have my own restaurant.
I want to cherish the attention to detail and spirit of hospitality that go into the Japanese food I love. In addition to making this a popular Malaysian restaurant, I also want to contribute to society by providing affordable, nutritious meals to elderly people living alone and those who are struggling financially.
